Creative Crochet Yarn Bowl Ideas

Crocheting and knitting are the hobbies of many, and their attractiveness is addicting. Many people keep it as a hobby while others turn it into their livelihood. These people keep on looking for ways with which they can create ease in their work. One of the difficulties of crocheters is the tangling and fraying of yarn. The tools to solve this problem are the yarn bowls.

There are many beautiful yarn bowls available in the market. They have unique designs with which you can pull out a thread easily. These bowls are made of high-quality porcelain, ceramic, wood, plastic, and other materials. They are available in different sizes for different sizes of yarn and can even accommodate hanks. You can get it according to your project.

However, some of the yarn bowls are heavy and can’t be carried everywhere. Some designs are costly, and you can’t buy them all the time. For this, the best way is to be creative and make a yarn bowl on your own.

The issue is that not all people are good at woodwork or clay molding, nor they have friends or relatives who can do so. So, making a homemade yarn bowl is an option only for a few. They’ll have a figure out another way to find a suitable and efficient replacement for yarn bowls for the others.

This article will shine a light on some of the ideas you can use for yarn bowls. These include household items, so getting a hold of them is not that hard.

  1. Using a Plastic Bag: a plastic bag is a good option for holding and storing many yarns together. If you are missing a yarn bowl, then you can make a hole in the pocket and let the thread go through it. It serves a dual purpose, as you can store the hanks and use it as a yarn bowl as well. It is also useful if you want to use multiple cords for a project at once.
  2. Binder Clips: These clips are great for binding several papers and are a good substitute for files. But with a creative mind, they can be more than that. Just unravel a piece of cord from the yarn and clasp it with the binder clip. The thread will move smoothly through it, and thus, you have a yarn bowl replacement.
  3. Flower Pot: using a flower pot may also be a good idea as a yarn bowl. It has a hole at the bottom for draining water. You can place a yarn and cover it with the pot. Then, passing the thread through the hole of the upside-down flower pot. In this way, the string will also be secure and won’t go here and there.
  4. Teapot Yarn Dispenser: do you have a teapot at home, but it is only collecting dust? An excellent way to reuse it is by turning it into a yarn bowl. You have to place the yarn ball in the teapot and pass the cord through its spout. The teapot’s lid will keep the yarn in place.
  5. Plastic Boxes: plastic boxes are a great way of storing a multitude of yarns at a time. Just like the plastic bags, you can quickly put cord balls in them. If you want to increase its functionality, making a hole on the surface is a good option. The spot should be polished before using; otherwise, the cord may be frayed.
  6. Empty Jars: we all are reluctant to throw our empty jars after using them, but somehow, we don’t know where to use them. For knitters, using them is a great option. Just place the yarn in the jar and close the pot with a lid. You can make a hole on the cover and let the cord easily pass through.
  7. Colander: kitchen utensils are great for our cooking endeavors, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t be used for anything else. Since the colander already has holes on all its surface, placing a yarn it to hold it and using it as a yarn bowl is the quickest way. They are also great for allowing multiple threads to pass at once.
  8. Kleenex Boxes: Kleenex boxes or tissue boxes are another great container with holes that are readily available in your home. They would serve as an excellent substitute for yarn bowls by holding the skeins in place and unraveling the cord smoothly.
  9. Jug with Lid: a jar with a lid works in the same way as the teapot. Place all the yarns in their vast capacity and let the thread unroll through the mouth of the jug.
  10. Canister: a tin canister is another sturdy container to be used as a yarn bowl. You can make holes on the lid and smoothen them. Another option is making holes on its sides as well to make it usable for multiple thread balls.
  11. Empty CD Holder: CD holders are readily available in stationery stores, and if you look hard enough, you’ll find a few spare ones in your house. They have a hole in the middle through which the cord can be passed. A CD stand can also be used by wrapping the coil around the cylinder and letting the thread go through it.
  12. Paper Towel Holders: the paper towel holders work in the same way as the CD holders. You can either wind the yarn around the cylinder, letting the cord unravel from there, or you can pass the thread through the cylinder with the bundle on the other side.
  13. Tin cans: Tin cans are an option if you don’t have canisters. Drilling a hole in them might be slightly tricky, but the use is tremendous. You can paint the tin can for a better visual.
  14. Empty Plastic Bottles:  You can find plenty of empty plastic bottles. Just cut the bottom with a paper cutter and thrust the yarn bundle into the bottle. Through the hole, let the thread pass and use it easily for your knitting and crocheting.
  15. Small Laundry Baskets: laundry baskets also have holes in all of their sides. Using many threads at once and storing yarns becomes more comfortable with this as well.

Using such household items is not only great for the environment but is also cost-friendly. Using replacements of yarn bowls for your knitting projects is a great idea if you cannot buy an actual one.
