For those who use laptops on a regular, daily basis – you may have heard about running a battery report on Windows 10 to better gauge the life of your laptop and how well off it’s performing. Finding out if your battery life is great or starting to fall is an important tool to have.
Running a battery report is a hidden and optional tool built within Windows 10 that can help anyone decide when they may or may not need a new laptop, whether that be for work or leisure.
It can also show you what your battery status is, how well it has been running since you started using your laptop, and it gives a more accurate representation for how much battery life you have left based on actual use and data.
What is a battery report?
Windows 10 has a helpful built-in (and hidden) battery report tool that will tell you everything about your laptop battery. A battery report is the information you receive from using the tool – everything from the battery’s life estimate to its capacity / and capacity over time as its used, whether that’s more or less than you currently run it.
Intense work programs such as graphic design or leaving your laptop on 24/7. Contrary to popular belief, leaving your laptop charging all day while you use it doesn’t harm the battery itself – but you do have to watch for heat that can damage your battery and subsequently, the battery life.
It will show you usage history, battery capacity, chemistry, cycle count since you’ve lasted charged it, your PC’s name, manufacturer, and serial number. Some laptop manufacturers even have their own battery diagnostic tools.
How do I create the battery report?
To create a detailed battery report in Windows 10, it’s as simple as a few command strokes.
- Hit the Windows Button + X to quickly open the Command Prompt, search for Command Prompt, or find it under the Windows System folder in the Start menu.
- Type in powercfg/batteryreport – no spaces, no capitalizations – all in one line.
- Hit Enter and you should receive a notice that says ‘Battery life report saved to ‘C:\Windows\wherever your battery report saved itself to. It can be under system32, or it will save itself under your ‘User’ folder, etc.
- Open the HTML file in whichever browser you choose, and there you will find all of the information pertaining to your computers battery.
Battery life estimate is the main information users are interested about, since it can accurately give you an estimate on how long you can expect your battery to last based on actual usage. Included with this is how your battery life has changed since you first installed the operating system.
Using the battery report can give you a more accurate gauge on how well your battery works or how much percentage you have left, compared to just relying on the battery icon in your taskbar tray.
Is it necessary? Why do I need to?
The battery is without a doubt the most crucial part of your laptop, especially if it’s being used for work. It is the most critical piece of hardware – without power, you can’t use anything, and you may even have to recover vital files in a roundabout way if your battery dies and won’t turn back on.
If you find that your laptop is dying too quickly all of a sudden, you suspect it may be defective, or seems to be starting to drain faster than normal, then you might want to run the battery report tool. Each report gets saved as an HTML file that can be viewed on your browser that includes data on your system and battery health.
Wrap-Up
Creating a battery report on Windows 10 is simple, easy enough that anyone can do it, and it allows you to learn more about the system and hardware you’re using. It can give insight into what your battery’s life is like, or how it may be running.
Is it necessary? No. Does it help? Definitely. Especially when it comes to technology and something we use every single day, it’s worth taking the five minutes (or less) to better understand our systems and perhaps even improve upon it or find issues and fix them.
