How the Rising Chip Shortage Can Affect the Computer Repair Industry

The COVID-19 pandemic has raged on for a while now, and its effects have changed the world as we know it. Entire economies have been upset, industries have seen a major shift, and both consumers and businesses have faced the brunt of it. One of the most compelling issues, however, is the chip shortage that the world is seeing, and it is affecting all sorts of industries.

Since microchips are the predominant component in many computers, it’s easy to see how the chip shortage would affect their sale, operation, and repairs. In this article, we’ve discussed at length how the rising chip shortage can shape the computer repair industry for the foreseeable future.

The reality of the global semiconductor shortage

The world today is heavily reliant on semiconductor technology. We not only use it in our electronic devices but also in manufacturing those devices and producing all sorts of things. Semiconductors are found in our TVs, our cars, our phones, our computers, even our refrigerators. So it’s evident that this is a component that makes the world work the way that it does.

However, due to the pandemic, these chips aren’t being made at the rate that they once used to be. This, in turn, has caused the global economy to recover much slower from the effects of the pandemic. The issue has been so dire that President Joe Biden has had to sign an executive order to address the chip shortage in the United States and ordered his administration to review supply chains and work towards strengthening them.

Because semiconductors are a vital part of all sorts of computers, it’s also hampered the sale and usage of many devices that people own. Companies at the forefront of computer innovation are facing an increasingly difficult challenge in providing consumers with the devices that they want. As a result, many people are now facing the reality of not being able to upgrade their systems or obtain the best hardware for their needs. This has caused many to rely on their existing or older systems to make do with their requirements, which isn’t really the most ideal case.

Ultimately, getting newer systems and devices will prove to be both costly and rare as the current trend carries on. Regardless of whether your computer repair shop software has the capability to catalog and order inventory, if the supply is short, then you’re going to face business worries.

What is causing the shortage?

The dearth of semiconductors that we’re seeing is, obviously, due to the pandemic. Stay-at-home orders around the world caused more people to buy and upgrade their machines than ever before. People bought computers, TVs, home speakers, game consoles, and much more to be able to spend their lives inside their houses. Businesses also invested in stronger infrastructure, which required more devices and more computers.

Not only was there more demand for the same computer systems, but the demand for newer devices also grew, with newer game consoles, Intel chips, and Nvidia graphics cards being at the forefront of the debacle. With demand increasing and supply taking a major hit due to work restrictions, it was inevitable that the rate at which semiconductors were being produced would be outpaced by the demand.

But how does this relate to the computer repair industry?

The effect on computer repairs

For computers that have been recently bought or that have been in use for some time now, repairing will inevitably be required. This means that many components which we need to repair computers might not be available as time goes on with the current semiconductor shortage.

Analysts have speculated that the chip shortage will linger on for the foreseeable future, which will hamper computer repairs as time goes on. It won’t be as simple as searching up the required part in your computer repair shop software and pulling it out for a repair anymore. Finding the right component and repairing a computer with it is going to be a more arduous task than it is right now.

Furthermore, the more obsolete a computer system is, the more difficult it may prove to find the necessary components for it. Newer chips cannot exactly fit into an older computer, so it’s necessary to find the right kind of components that go along with the system.

What can be done to circumvent the shortage?

In order to deal with this current crisis and make sure our industries continue to operate, there are a couple of things that can be done. The Biden Administration’s focus on improving the supply chain is one of them. If the timely delivery of these semiconductor chips is made, then it could help offset the overwhelming demand that consumers have.

Working on increasing the manufacturing of semiconductors in more areas would also help with the situation. Being able to order a chip made in North America would have significantly fewer costs and delays than ordering it from China or Taiwan. Companies are seeing that, and have begun to work towards building their manufacturing pipeline closer to home to prevent delays in their supply chain.

Recycling old tech also would be a great way to go and alleviate the shortage. By using devices that are a couple of generations old and that are currently in large supplies, customers will be able to get the processing power they need without having to wait in line for their favorite devices to become available at MSRP. Of course, this means that people won’t be able to get the latest fancy-pants computer or technology in their pocket, but as the situation stands, they can’t get it anyway.

Conclusion

The world has been severely shaken by the shortage of semiconductors, there’s no denying that. It’s now more difficult to get your hands on an Nvidia RTX 3090 than an actual fairy tale creature. Because of this shortage, repairing computers is also problematic as well. If your motherboard gets fried or your power controller starts acting up, then it’s going to be tough to find the necessary components to make the fix.

While it does look like we’ll be facing chip shortages for a while, efforts are being made to curtail it by improving the supply chain and having more manufacturing centers being created so that we’re able to produce the chips that we need. It’s a slow process though, and until then, we’ll have to rely on what technology we can get our hands on instead of what we want to get our hands on when it comes to computer repair.
